Employment in Canada
Finding work in Canada can take time. For many newcomers, it takes several months of consistent effort to secure employment.
Job searching often requires daily applications, follow-ups, and learning how Canadian hiring systems work. We suggest you deliver resumes to companies, hand them to the staff member who is hiring, and phone or visit to follow-up.
Employment agencies do not place people directly into jobs and cannot guarantee employment.
Employers and community partners interested in supporting newcomer employment can find more information below.

How support works at Grassroots
Employment support at Grassroots is largely relationship-based. In Canada, many jobs are found through personal connections rather than job postings alone.
Grassroots is run by volunteers. The purpose of registering with us is to be connected with volunteers who provide practical support and get to know you over time. Through these interactions, volunteers may learn about your work experience, skills, and employment goals.
When possible, volunteers may:
-
Share job leads they hear about through friends, family, or community networks
-
Introduce newcomers to employers they know
-
Speak with others in their networks about job openings
-
Help newcomers understand how to approach employers in Canada
These connections happen gradually and depend on volunteer availability, location, and networks. Not all volunteers have job leads, and not all connections result in employment.
What we expect from people seeking employment support
People seeking employment support are expected to:
-
Actively search and apply for jobs on their own
-
Register with a local employment or settlement agency
-
Let us know which employment agency they are working with
-
Stay in communication and update us on their job search progress
-
Job seekers are encouraged to speak openly with volunteers about their work experience and employment goals so volunteers can better support and advocate when appropriate.
For employers and partners
Employment support at Grassroots is built through community connections and partnerships.
We work with employers, organizations, churches, service groups, and community members who are open to supporting newcomers’ employment journeys — whether by hiring, sharing job leads, or making introductions.
Grassroots is not a recruitment agency. We facilitate connections, support communication, and remain involved when possible, but employment outcomes depend on fit, availability, and employer needs.
